Practice history

Beech House Verterinary Centre has been a veterinary practice since the 1870s, owned and run by two families throughout this time.

Originally started by Mr Payne, three generations carried the practice – known as Payne and Son, until it was taken over by John Crittall in 1961.

It was mainly a farm practice with Mr Payne visiting farms by horse and carriage and when John Crittall joined in 1960, they were looking after clients spread out within an amazing five counties.

HistoryJohn Westaway joined the practice creating a new partnership, Crittall and Westaway, with the late Peter Howard joining them in 1973.  The practice continued to look after large farms, riding stables and four separate groups of Big Cats, including the private zoo in St George’s Hill.

Crittall and Westaway became increasingly better known for looking after dogs and cats.  It was also asked to become the Veterinary Surgeons for Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, and its training establishments in Hersham.  It was responsible for overseeing the welfare and care of an estimated 2 million racing greyhounds, by the time the practice retired from this role in 2001.

Today's owner, Jamie Crittall, replaced Peter within the partnership when he took early retirement in 2000 and the practice was re-named Beech House Veterinary Centre, incorporating the outlying branches in Cobham and Shepperton. At this time the practice also said goodbye to the large animal work to concentrate fully on small animal veterinary practice.  John Westaway retired in 2002 with John Crittall following two years later.  Jamie Crittall now has the role as caretaker of the practice, trusting that it will continue for another 140 years, whilst hoping that a future generation may want to share in its heritage.

Beech House has always moved with the times, aiming to be at the forefront of developments within the veterinary profession, whilst still maintaining the family based, warm and friendly, personal service.  We continuously try to enhance our levels of service and have opened an attractive branch in Thames Ditton, and moved into much nicer & very well equipped premises in Shepperton.
