Obesity

Obesity is now one of the most common diseases affecting dogs and cats in the UK and it is as unhealthy for our pets as it is for us. It can lead to heart and lung disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer, but with a good diet and plenty of regular exercise you can keep your pet fit and healthy and enjoying a longer and better quality of life.

Take a closer look at your pet’s lifestyle.

  • How much and what food does your pet eat?
  • Does your pet have many treats or titbits?
  • Does your pet have enough good, regular exercise?
  • Does your cat go outside for exercise or play inside?
  • Is your dog reluctant to go for walks?

For dogs and cats there are a few simple checks you can do which, if carried out regularly, can help you to prevent your pet from becoming obese:

You should be able to see and feel the outline of your pet’s ribs without excess fat covering.
You should be able to see and feel your pet’s waist and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above.
Your pet’s belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side.
