Urine Sampling in your Dog

How to Collect a Urine Sample from your Dog

Free Catch Mid Stream
Try to catch your dog when he or she squats or lifts his leg to urinate. Hold a clean container underneath your pet to try and collect the urine mid stream. Some dogs may be deterred from urinating by you being so close and stop when you approach. However, if you catch them with a very full bladder, such as first thing in the morning, you may be able to catch enough for analysis. We only need a small amount.

Please use clean and dry containers for collection and storage of urine samples. Containers which previously contained sugar, such as jam jars, may cause inaccuracy in the analysis if not properly cleaned prior to use.

Urine collection does take time and patience and some luck!

2 206 sOnce you have collected the sample, the sooner you can bring it to us the better. Changes can occur over time - bacteria can mulitply and crystal can dissolve. If you can't get the sample to us straight away, keep it in a sealed container in the fridge.

Please provide samples labelled with your pets name, your name and the date collected.

Beech House Veterinary Centre would advise you to wear gloves or wash your hands after handling urine.
If all else fails, contact Beech House as there are other ways to collect urine but would require you to bring your pet in to us.
